An article on BirthplaceMag.com warns potential contributors to “wait and see” before donating to the charity mentioned in a letter purported to be a deathbed farewell to fans by Guru, the veteran rapper who died last weekend at the age of 43 from cardiac arrest that resulted from cancer complications.
The letter, released to the public by Guru’s longtime business partner, Solar, quotes Guru as saying, “I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life.”
While there is such a foundation that helps children with cancer, not much else is known about the non-profit, and Guru’s involvement, if any, remains unclear. In addition, the letter's authenticity has been called into question, particularly after Guru’s family issued a statement denying any knowledge of any foundation in Guru’s name, insisting that the rapper had not been conscious since a February coma, disputing Solar’s claims that the letter was written by Guru himself in recent weeks.
News media and entertainment blogs are reporting that the foundation was founded by Guru, or recently launched, neither of which seem to be true, according to tax documents and other public records. Birthplace Magazine’s investigation is ongoing, as calls to the foundation and inquiries sent to Guru’s record label have not been answered.
