Jordan announced in June he was leaving the team. He rejoined the Illini in September. In between, the junior guard spent two days in a 3-on-3 tournament that wasn't sanctioned by the NCAA. Since he participated for two days, he received a two-game suspension.
But if he wasn't on the team, why can't he participate in a 3-on-3 tournament?
Players have five years to play four seasons. Even though he wasn't a member of the Illinois basketball team when he participated in the 3-on-3 tournament, his five-year clock was still running and he was still under the NCAA's guidelines, a UI spokesman said.
"It was just an innocent thing," coach Bruce Weber said today.
Former Illini players Brian Cook and Jerrance Howard had a similar type of situation at the start of the 2002-03 season. They played in a non-sanctioned event and received two-game suspensions. The difference is, Jordan wasn't planning on returning to the Illini when he participated in the 3-on-3 tournament.
"When he went through the compliance process here, it was discovered," Weber said.
Jordan, who can still practice with the team, played 19 minutes in Illinois' 84-63 exhibition win against Quincy on Sunday. He did not score and had four assists.
He must miss home games against SIU-Edwardsville (Friday) and Northern Illinois (Nov. 17) but will be eligible to return against Presbyterian on Nov. 21.
"This adds another bit of a dilemma to it (figuring out the rotation). We'll deal with it and give somebody else an opportunity," Weber said. "Then it gives Jeff probably a little more time to get his conditioning (in shape), which you could see Sunday he definitely needs that."
