Mark Ingram's father is proud that he won the 2009 Heisman Trophy Saturday night, and he said that his father, Mark Ingram, Sr. greatly influenced him. Ingram said his father influenced him by "just being tough on me. Everything he did for me helped me become the man I am today on and off the field."
Mark Ingram, Sr. is currently in prison for bank fraud in Queens.
"I'm sure he's excited, and he's proud of me," Mark Ingram, Jr. said. "Everything hasn't always been easy, so the chance to do this for my family is really important to me."
Mark Ingram Sr. played in the NFL as a receiver for 10 seasons for the New York Giants, and he was responsible for a winning catch in the New York Giants' Super Bowl in 1991.
A few minutes after the announcement that Ingram won the Heisman, Mark Ingram Sr. called his wife excited and proud that his son won.
Mark Ingram is a sophomore at the University of Alabama. This is the first Heisman winner from the University of Alabama. "Ingram has rushed for a school-record 1,542 yards and 15 touchdowns this season for the undefeated Crimson Tide," according to the Dallas News.
Stanford running back Toby Gerhart was a very close second for the 2009 Heisman Trophy, in fact the closest race in the history of Heisman Trophy winners.
In 2004, Utah celebrated its first ever Heisman football finalist with Utah quarterback Alex Smith.
