Label: Def Jam, Corporate Thugz Entertainment
Young Jeezy The Snowman comes in at number 5 on our list with his third major label release The Recession. With two successful albums behind him Jizzle could do no wrong, and he packed The Recession album full of hot singles such as “Put On” with Kanye West and “My President Is Black,” which was his ode to newly elected President Obama. But at it’s core The Recession was an album addressing America’s financial woes. This is what many people consider to be Jeezy’s breakout album.
4. Jay-Z & Kanye West, Watch The Throne (2011)
Label: Roc-A-Fella, Roc Nation, Def Jam
“Human beings in a mob, what’s a mob to a king?” sang Frank Ocean on “No Church In The Wild,” the opening banger on the Watch The Throne Album, the collab album between Jay-Z & Kanye West. Rap Loyalty came together and decided to make the album that fans have been waiting years for. This was easily album of the year when it came out because it combined great productions over witty raps. Jay-Z and Kanye West traded bars all through out the album, and spawned hits such as “Nigga’s In Paris” and “Who’s Gon Stop Me.”
3. Lil Wayne, Tha Carter II (2005)
Label: Cash Money, Universal
After years of grinding and rapping, Lil Wayne morphed from raw talent to a fully formed artist. With its unending, effortless verses, mix of freestyle-ish, mixtape-sounding cuts with polished radio cuts, and uncharacteristically soulful beat selection, this was the album that put Weezy in the “best rapper alive” conversation. Tha Carter II just might be Lil Wayne’s best album, infusing street raps with futuristic beats. He pioneered a style that’s being imitated to this day. Lil Wayne on “Fireman” is when his swag was on the highest level, and he sounded like a hungry emcee aiming at the throne.
2. Kanye West, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy(2010)
Label: Roc-A-Fella, Def Jam
Kanye West’s fifth solo album was perhaps his most honest and soul baring one to date. Kanye laid it all out there for the fans and allowed us to see the demons he has to wrestle with on a day to day basis. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy showed us a side of Kanye West that we’ve never seen before, and spawned hits such as “Devil In A New Dress” featuring Rick Ross and “Runaway” featuring Pusha T. Kanye made this album after his tragic breakup wit Amber Rose, and the turmoils of that relationship can be heard all throughout this album.
MBDTF also had a deeper story of a man struggling to protect his soul from the dark forces that are trying to take it over. Easily one of the best albums Kanye West has released in his career.
1. Jay-Z, The Black Album (2003)
Label: Roc-A-Fella, Def Jam
One of hip-hop’s most iconic figures, Jay-Z’s The Black Album was his goodbye album, and he went out like a king to become the president of Def Jam Records. Arguably one of his best albums, Jay-Z laid it all out on the line for one last great album before his self imposed exile, but he left fans with hit singles like “Public Service Announcement,” “99 Problems,” “Encore,” and “Dirt Off You Shoulder.”
