Three University of Tennessee football players are in custody and charged with attempted armed robbery after an incident that occurred early this morning at a Pilot convenience store located on Cumberland Avenue in Knoxville, near the University of Tennessee campus.

According to Knoxville Police Department Spokesman Darrell DeBusk, Nu'Keese Richardson, Janzen Jackson and Mike Edwards were being held at the Knox County Detention Center.

Officers responded to the Pilot convenience store located at 2218 Cumberland Ave. at about 1:43 this morning on an armed robbery in progress call. According to police reports three men were sitting in car waiting on a friend who was inside the store.

The three men stated they had parked next to a light blue Toyota Prius. Then went on to say a black male then approached, wearing a black hoodie and brandished a black semi-automatic handgun. He opened the drivers door and said, "Give me everything you have."

The men said that a black male then exited from the passenger side of the Prius, wearing a black hoodie. He walked around to the front passenger door of their car, opened it, and said, "Give us everything you've got."

According to statements made by the men to the police, they all presented their wallets to the suspects and showed them that they did not have money. A third black male then approached and told the other two black males, "We've got to go." The three got into the Prius and left, according to reports.

The Prius was observed near Gibbs Hall on Lake Loudoun Blvd. on the University of Tennessee campus. A felony stop was conducted on the vehicle, and four subjects were detained from the vehicle.

Officers saw two black hoodies in plain view on the back seat. Underneath the back seat toward the middle, officers found a black, CO2 powered pellet gun. Inside the glove box, officers located a marijuana grinder. A search of the suspects revealed one clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana in the driver of the vehicle, Marie Montmarquet's jacket pocket. Montmarquet later stated that the marijuana grinder also belonged to her. She was charged with posession, in addition to attempted armed robbery.

Crime Lab responded to the scene and confiscated the hoodies, the pellet gun and the marijuana grinder. The vehicle was towed to the city impound lot. The marijuana was confiscated by officers.

All four suspects were transported back to the Pilot for a show up identification. The victims positively identified Edwards and Richardson as the two who approached their vehicle and demanded everything.
