* 9:53 a.m. update: Heard an ESPN commentator this morning urge Tiger Woods to fire everybody and skip Masters/US Open. Interesting thought. Sounds like the commentator wants a job with Woods.
My thought: Did Letterman stop doing shows? Clinton stop being president? Ali stop fighting? Pete Rose stop hitting? Kobe Bryant stop trying to score 100? This is what they do, when they're caught cheating or not.
The big performers just go out there and perform, whatever's happening in their private lives. To say that Woods should stop doing what he does better than anybody else, as a personal sacrifice to please an ESPN commentator… that's sublime.
* Straight from today's Merc sports page, with one add:
Is Tiger Woods capable of winning a major in 2010, despite all the tumult in his public and private lives?
Well… the Masters is at Augusta National in April, and he has won that tournament four previous times and finished second the last two years.
The U.S. Open is at Pebble Beach in June, and the last time the U.S. Open was held there, Woods won by a record 15 strokes in 200.
The British Open is at St. Andrews in July, and Woods won the Open the last
two times it was held at St. Andrews.
Yeah, Woods might be fairly set up to win a major or three next year. People have thought that since the major schedule was set for 2010–this could be a dominant Woods season.
Whether he's in the tabloid headlines all year or not, whether you want him to win or not, if he isn't thrown totally off his game–and I have a guess that he will be the opposite–Woods has a chance to win two or three majors in 2010.

There will be a Tiger Woods relaunch, just you wait.
You might not like it when it happens, but it's inevitable and probably sustainable.
It will not involve lurid stories about cocktail waitresses, though that seems impossible to imagine right now. Maybe we will just run out of them, or Tiger will, whichever happens first.
It might not involve new endorsement deals or even retaining most of his old deals, but who really cares about that except Woods, his accountants and possibly his wife's divorce lawyers?
The relaunch will involve several historic golf courses, Woods' laser focus, the competition heating up, and, yes, the guy in the red shirt winning big tournaments.
Naturally, it won't be as loud and constant as the tabloid blasts during Woods' current, deserved stay in Philanderer's Purgatory.
(Which looks and feels a lot like Central Florida, only less humid, I would think.)
The latest bulletin: Woods' mother-in-law, Barbro Holmberg was rushed from his house to the hospital, reportedly suffering from stomach pain, then released 11 hours later. full story
